Craig Metzner, DVM

Dr. Metzner has been working in an animal hospital since he was first allowed to get a job at the age of 16. After graduating from Seaford Senior High School in 1996, he began his collegiate journey at the University of Delaware, where he received his Bachelor of Science in Animal Science concentrating in pre-veterinary medicine and agricultural biotechnology, in 2000. Good grades, campus activism, great interviewing skills and a winning smile earned him admission into the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech, where he earned a Doctorate of Veterinarian Medicine in 2004. Prior to returning home to Sussex County, he married his high school sweetheart, Amy in 2001. In 2012, he and a group of ambitious pet lovers opened the Western Sussex Animal Hospital, a life-long dream of his now realized. Known in the community as a devoted, compassionate veterinarian, Dr. Metzner is often seen in his local church with his wife and two sons, running around town to various sporting and band events, traveling or camping with the family and their playful dog, TinkerBell.

Larry Metzner

Larry’s love of animals began at a very young age. He enrolled at West Virginia University, majoring in Pre-Veterinary Medicine, but circumstances changed. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture. After graduation from WVU he moved to Harrisonburg, VA to work in the poultry industry in International Logistics sending frozen poultry to many parts of the world. In 1985 he moved his family to Delaware, again to work in the poultry industry. When Dr. Metzner started WSAH in 2012, Larry started working with his son as the Office Manager. Now he is semi-retired and works part time. He and his wife have two small dogs, Ani and Ariel and one cat, Sam. When Larry isn’t in the office, he is either working in his woods or attending one of their grandkid’s events.

Samantha Millman

Sam started with WSAH in Spring of 2015, as an intern, while she was completing the Veterinary Technology Program with Delaware Technical and Community College. Sam is now a Licensed Veterinary Technician after graduating in 2016 and completing her national boards. She splits her time between WSAH and being an Adjunct Instructor for the Delaware Technical Veterinary Technology Program. She is a very passionate animal advocator and loves taking the time to educate animal owners. Her favorite thing about working at WSAH is the “work family” she gets to spend her days with. She loves her pack of 4 dogs that range from all sizes. When Sam is not busy at work, she can be found on her farm caring for her variety of animals and hanging out with her husband and son.

Also known as the resident cat lady; Emily is also one of Licensed Veterinary Technicians. She has been with WSAH since 2013, after completing Veterinary Technology Program at Delaware Technical and Community College. As a child Emily always loved anything to do with animals. Her favorite show growing up was Emergency Vets. She’s always been fascinated with surgery and fixing what is broken, so to help medically or surgically save an animal is a life goal. When Emily is not at work you can find her curled up on the couch with a book in her hands and a cat in her lap. She also loves playing the piano and on the nice days walking through a state park.

Tara has always been interested in veterinary medicine since she was a child and started working in the veterinary field in 2005. She has been a practicing Licensed Veterinary Technician after completing the Veterinary Technician National Exam in 2011 and graduated from Delaware Technical and Community College in 2012. She adores her 3 German Shepard dogs Jada, Jagger, and Jovi. Tara enjoys spending time with her Husband and 2 daughters on the weekends and in her spare time. Her favorite parts of being an LVT at WSAH is the team she gets to work with every day and the rewarding experience of helping the clients and their beloved pets.

Haley Tallent

Haley started at Western Sussex Animal Hospital in September 2020 with 13 years of experience. She graduated from the Delaware Technical and Community College’s Veterinary Technology Program in 2009, with her associates degree. Haley developed her passion for helping animals at a young age and loves being able to work with them every day. Haley feels right at home working with the team at WSAH and enjoys working with small animal medicine but also likes reptiles as well. She loves spending time with her husband, son, dogs, Juny and cooking or crocheting.

Jen found her life calling, of working with animals, in 1995 when she first started in veterinary field. Jen helped Dr. Metzner open the doors of the hospital in 2012 and has set the positive tone for our team. She loves her 4 cats and her beloved dog, Jack! In her free time, she likes being with her animals, including her grand-dog, Louie and her two daughters or watching football. Go Cowboys!

Jasmine found her calling in the veterinary field in 2006 and helped open WSAH in 2012 as one of the main receptionists. Even though her job title suggests she should be at the front desk, she can often be found in the back loving on our patients. When Jasmine is not at work or wrangling one of her many four-legged and feathered friends, she loves being on the water kayaking with her husband and their 2 children. Lauren came to Western Sussex Animal Hospital in August 2018 after working in the field for 10 years as a receptionist/tech at previous animal hospitals. Lauren thoroughly enjoys working the front desk and being the first person that our clients see or talk too, making sure that the owners are well taken care of and have everything they need. Lauren has helped WSAH slowly transition to going paperless as her favorite thing is making everything easier on the doctor and the team. When Lauren is not at work, she is chauffeuring her three kids around to all of their activities, hanging out with her Fiancé on the farm, or relaxing at home with her 4 dogs while working on her circuit.
